Eddie Jean Jackson Martin was born September 1, 1936, to Mae Ella Jackson Lunnie and Lucius Dudley in Scott, Arkansas. Jean, as she was lovingly known to family and friends, attended Little Rock public school. She would later attend and graduate from Wayne State University in Detroit, MI, and work for many years as a seamstress at a bridal shop in downtown Detroit.
In 1956, Jean married J. L Martin, and they moved to Detroit, MI that same year. Four children were born to this union: Richard, Shelia, Jacqueline, and Lisa. The marriage would later end in divorce.
Soon after moving to Detroit, Jean accepted Christ as her savior. She joined Good Shephard Baptist Church and remained a faithful member for over 70 years. She was devoted to her church. Every Saturday morning she could be seen cleaning and making certain the church was spotless for service. Sundays, she would don her robe and sing praises to the Lord. She also became a church youth coordinator to make certain her children and grandchildren understood the importance of loving and serving the Lord. As a result of all her hard work and dedication, she received recognition and numerous awards over the years.
Jean loved to travel and could often be found on a Greyhound bus heading south to Arkansas or Georgia, or on a plane heading to California. In 2007, she began traveling outside the United States, taking cruises to Mexico and the Mexican Riviera.
Second to her love for the Lord, Jean loved her family and friends dearly. In spite of the fact that she buried three of her four children, her faith never wavered. When faced with the task of having to raise her grandchildren, she made sacrifices and did everything possible to make sure they had what they needed to succeed. She was also a caring, loving, and compassionate neighbor. People in the neighborhood knew if they were in need, Ms. Jean would help them in any way she could. Last, but definitely not least, she was a great cook and everyone knew it!
On Sunday September 27, 2020, Jean was called home to eternal rest at the age of 84. She leaves to cherish her memory a loving daughter, Lisa; two grandchildren, Darries Griffith (Chanel) of Cincinnati, OH, and Lachanna Griffith (Tobias) of Detroit, MI; five great grandchildren, Emanuel Griffith, Faith Griffith, Jonas Griffith, Zibiah Wyanna and Morris Griffith; two sisters, Essie Fischer of Atlanta, GA, and Melverdis Givens (a.k.a. Bobby) of Atlanta, GA; one brother, Gene Dudley of Kansas City, MO; a beloved friend Alberta Rich and a host of relatives and friends.
